Our History in Major U.S. City

What we did in a major U.S. city

The history of Kanatara (with another name) actually started decades ago in a major U.S. city. After graduating from Harvard Law School and a year in Stanford's MBA program, David Marmon pioneered the idea of informal (not for credit) education with teachers teaching a wide variety of classes in their homes and other locations of their choice. It was such a success that it made the major news media. It was in Time Magazine twice, U.S. News and World Report, and the New Yorker Magazine, among others. It was featured in media as far away as Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. NBC News came and filmed one of the classes.

Founder and CEO

We offered 125 classes with 1200 student signups each month. We printed and distributed 110,000 catalog/newspapers per month with full descriptions of all the classes. In today's dollars, the enterprise brought in $1,600,000 per year with a profit of $160,000, and at the same time, we added $500,000 in income per year to the teachers. (This does not imply any representation of the success you may or may not have.)

In that enterprise, we paid the teachers one-third of the class fees. We had meetings for teachers to develop interest in teaching classes and in the project generally. These meetings often took place in one of the teachers' homes. Although we bulk-mailed many catalog/newspapers each month, most of the distribution was done by a person who walked around distributing them to various shopping areas in the city.

It should be noted that our profit in that enterprise was only 10% of gross because we had an office, 3-4 full-time employees, and printed 110,000 multi-page catalogs. These were large expenses that you don't need to start your Kanatara Group. You don't need an office to get started, although you will probably want one later. Full Class and Circle descriptions will be on our web site. So you don't need to print expensive multi-page catalogs. You can print one-page or half-page flyers and refer to the web site for comprehensive descriptions and information. At some point, you may want to do as we did—move from volunteers to a paid part-time person to distribute the flyers to business outlets and shopping areas of your community.

It is this enterprise experience in a major U.S. city that we can pass on to you and help you make Kanatara a success in your local community. You are also free to come up with your own additional ideas of how to promote and publicize your Classes and Circles. Then share these ideas with other Operators on the Operators Blog. If yours is an omni-geographic or subject matter Group, you will need to discover a different model to let people know of your Classes and Circles.
